The opportunity is the Biden Administration’s Clean Air Building Challenge, and it has the potential to bring significant benefits to our industry.

There’s a spotlight on contractors, distributors, and manufacturers who sell products that are energy-efficient or that improve a building’s indoor air quality. In this article, we’ll cover:

  • How HVAC and IAQ professionals can get involved

What is the Clean Air Building Challenge?

The Clean Air Building Challenge is a new initiative from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that aims to reduce air pollution and improve indoor air quality in commercial and public buildings. It encourages building owners and operators to voluntarily adopt measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions of harmful pollutants. Working with the Department of Energy, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other federal agencies, they developed a guide for buildings to follow.

This voluntary initiative asks participants to reduce emissions from their buildings by at least 30% over the next decade. In return, they’ll receive support and recognition from the federal government. It’s open to any type of building, including office buildings, schools, hospitals, and retail stores.

The Opportunity for the HVAC and IAQ Industry

This is a great opportunity for our industry to show its commitment to improving air quality and reducing pollution. Every level of our industry, manufacturers, distributors, and contractors can work together. It provides a platform for businesses to showcase their products and services that can help buildings meet their emissions reduction goals.

Our industry has a wide range of products and services that can help buildings reduce their emissions. For example, there are many energy-efficient HVAC systems on the market that can help buildings save money while also reducing their emissions. Also, there are a number of IAQ assessments, services, and upgrades contractors can offer to help determine the best solutions for a building. That can remove harmful pollutants from the air, improve indoor air quality, and protect public health.
